Charged Garage purchased this beautifully restored ’65 Ford Cortina and handed it over to Traction EV to be converted to electric drive. We installed the NetGain HyPer 9 motor and 31 kWh Tesla battery to achieve a range of 180km.
Complete with CHAdeMO DC Fast charging, the electric Ford Cortina can charge to 80% in 30 minutes. This was a first for Traction EV to implement a DC fast charge system into an electric conversion. The Orion battery management system, or BMS, has the ability to communicate with the CHAdeMO public chargers.
The motor is the amazing NetGain HyPer 9 IS. This motor puts out 120 hp and 174 lbs/ft of torque. That’s more than double the power of the original 1500 cc engine.
Air-Conditioning! Did we mention Air-Conditioning?! Everyone takes it for granted now that cars have air-con, but before the 1990s very few cars had air-con. Getting back into a classic car without it can be a hot and sticky situation, especially with vinyl seats!
Traction EV installed an aftermarket air-con system into the electric Ford Cortina that fits neatly under the dash where it looks like it was meant to be there from factory. The air-con compressor has its own brushless motor that runs straight off the main battery pack. This means that it runs very efficiently compared to running air-con from an internal combustion engine using drive belts. You can’t feel and drag or loss in motor power when you turn on the a/c!
